2024 Class Descriptions - Shepherd's Wool

 

Introduction to Rug Hooking (April - June - October)     

Explore the various styles of rug hooking, tools of the trade, how to transfer a pattern design while working on a small mug mat. Learning these basic techniques is the key to rug hooking.

Tuition: $50 and includes small pattern, hook & wool. Bring your own lunch.

 

Traditional Rug Braiding – Chair Pad (April)

In this class, students will be using a chair pad kit to learn the basics of Traditional Rug Braiding. The kit includes everything you need to complete a 13” round chair pad. The equipment that is included in this kit can then be used in future rug braiding projects.

Tuition: Free with the purchase of a chair pad kit. (Chair pad kit price is $115.)

 

Needle Felting Basics (May)

Learn the basics of Needle Felting while making a small painting with wool whisps.

Tuition: $55 (includes instructions, needle, foam block & wool whisps). Bring your own lunch.

 

Punch Needle Embroidery (May)

Punch needle embroidery is a technique that uses a hollow punch needle to push embroidery floss through weaver’s cloth while making miniature loops. Students can choose from a selection of punch needle patterns and floss that we have in the shop.   

Tuition: Free with the purchase of hoop, punch needle, floss & pattern.

                                                                                     

Adding Braids to Rug Hooking (June - October)

Students will come to class with a rug hooking project that has been completed, but the edges have not yet been finished. Learn an easy

3-step picture method of framing your rug hooking project with braids. Students may bring their own wool for their braid, or they can purchase wool from the store. If students don’t already have Shepherd’s Wool, “Adding Braids to Rug Hooking” Booklet, they will need to purchase this in class since we will be using these step-by-step instructions when braiding. ($15.)

Tuition: $50 Bring your own lunch.

 

Combining Rug Hooking with Wool Applique (July)

Have fun combining wool applique with rug hooking. Three different patterns will be available for students to choose from

Tuition: $65 (includes instruction, pattern & wool). Bring your own lunch.

 

Rug Hooking - Student’s Choice (July)

Choose from several rug hooking patterns in the store or work on a pattern that you already have in your stash. Color planning, instructions, techniques will be covered in this class. Instructor will get with students prior to class for pattern selection/needs.

Tuition: $50 (plus pattern & wool if needed)

                                                                                                         

Traditional Rug Braiding – 2’ x 3’ Oval Rug (2 sessions) (August)

This is a two-session class that covers braiding basics, instructions for braiding oval rugs, color changing and finishing techniques. Total wool needed for making a 2’ x 3’ oval is 5-6 yards. Wool & braiding supplies are not included in the tuition fee.

(Clamp: $65 / Lacing Thread: $10 / Lacer: $4 ).

Tuition: $75 and covers both sessions. Bring your own lunch.

 

Combining Rug Hooking w/Punch Needle Embroidery (September)

Special Class with “VISITING INSTRUCTOR – Kelly Kanyok” from Orphaned Wool in Ohio. Students will work on “Diamond Blooms” a beautiful pattern from Orphaned Wool that can be turned into a pillow or into a framed piece of artwork.

Tuition: $360 (Includes: Punch Needle Pattern Kit, Ultra Punch Needle Kit (if needed), Rug Hooking Kit, Rug Hooking Wools & Instruction for this 3-day class) Note: If you already have an Ultra Punch Needle Kit, tuition is $334.00)

Bring your own lunch.

                                     

Hooked Rug Inserts (November)

Students will learn techniques on inserting smaller hooked projects into larger ones using design elements from the original hooked piece. This is a great way to utilize smaller hooked pieces!                                                                                                                     

Tuition: $50 (plus cost of foundation cloth for insert - cost depends on the size of project). Bring your own lunch.                         

                                                                                                                                      

Wool Christmas Decorations (November)       

Several projects will be available for students to choose from.
Tuition: The cost depends on what you make...one or several!
